Centre for Environmental Biotechnology (CEB)
Project Objectives
Benefits to the economy of the Welsh convergence area:
- Inward investment to establish new commercial R&D capacity because of:
- linkage to internationally competitive staff research expertise and facilities of Bangor University in specific key growth areas of science/technology;
- availability of high calibre new employees from specific relevant programmes (e.g. MSc graduates)
- Improved efficiency and profitability of existing Welsh businesses to build the bio-based economy:
- farms; agricultural/forestry contractors; added value through new on-farm or local contractor processing of harvested biomass (marine as well as terrestrial biomass; valorisation the new); improved efficiency of nutrient-rich on-farm waste to sustain future agricultural productivity;
- agricultural/forestry supply/product chain (including food and food packaging, sawmilling and wood products) companies through maximising the efficient utilisation of their waste/by-products; creating new markets for them on-farm and further along the product chain;
- specialist chemical/pharmaceutical/materials etc. companies – are there enough of them and is it realistic that the Bangor University/Science Park capacity will be able to deliver new products to them
